Demolishing structures with humidity and mould damage is a health risk

When demolishing structures affected by humidity and mould damage, microbe levels in indoor air rise to a level that can cause an occupational disease to those exposed.

Microbes have been found to spread from the damaged site to other parts, and in unprotected demolition in addition to construction workers, other people in the premises also become exposed.

When proper protective measures have not been taken, all the users of the premises have to be evacuated for the duration of the renovation project. Naturally this creates expense and causes a nuisance and trouble.

Asbestos work

Asbestos-related work must be conducted without causing danger to employees and those affected by the project following the guidelines of the Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate of Uusimaa and Finnish Government Decision 1380/94 concerning work with asbestos.

In enclosing, the work site and the surrounding area is isolated from other premises by creating an airtight barrier and negative pressure by low-pressure source extraction for the duration of the asbestos removal project. When handling asbestos, a high-pressure extractor is directed straight at the origin of the dust.

Occupational safety and health authorities also require the use of asbestos concerning work processes in handling several other materials causing a possible health hazard, such as materials with microbe damage, coal tar creosote, PCB-containing materials and lead.

Oy Hesasbest Ab also performs renovation projects involving mould dust and removal of other indoor air contaminants.

Safe and efficient work methods

Thanks to careful protection and efficient air-cleaning and drying machines, renovation can be conducted safely so that people in the vicinity of the work site do not get exposed to contaminants released, for example, in the case of humidity and mould damage. Therefore, renovations can be made without having to evacuate the building.

As a subcontractor to construction companies, we also provide services isolating work sites from other premises by creating an airtight barrier and establishing negative pressure.

Principle of enclosure

Dust-free renovations

In demolition projects dust management is required by law. In accordance with regulations the spreading of contaminants released in the demolition and drying of buildings and structures must be prevented. The renovation site is enclosed and isolated by creating negative pressure so that contaminants cannot spread to uncontaminated areas. Therefore, there is no need to evacuate the people in the vicinity of the renovation, but the premises can be used normally excluding the renovation enclosure.
